Raigad, Maharashtra: A picnic trip turned into a heartbreaking tragedy at the popular Diveagar Beach in Maharashtra’s Raigad district after eight students from Pune reportedly drowned while taking a dip in the sea. The students were caught in strong waves while bathing, leaving them unable to make their way back to safety.
As soon as the incident came to light, local residents and rescue personnel rushed to the spot and began efforts to bring the students out of the water.
According to the available information, the students had travelled from the Alandi area of Pune district to Diveagar as part of a picnic organised by a private coaching institute. All of them were reportedly studying in Classes 11 and 12 in the Science stream.
Students Drowned While Bathing in the Sea
The students had entered the sea during their visit to Diveagar Beach. However, the situation quickly turned dangerous after they were caught in powerful waves.
Local residents immediately responded to the emergency and joined the rescue operation. The students were eventually brought out of the water and taken to the Borli Primary Health Centre for medical attention.
Despite the rescue efforts, medical officials declared all eight students dead after examination.
Students Had Come From Alandi for a Picnic
The students were residents of the Alandi area of Pune and had travelled to Diveagar along with a private coaching class.
The news of the accident left their families devastated, with grief spreading across the area. Police and local authorities have begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Initial information suggests that the students may have been caught off guard by the depth of the water and the strong waves. However, the exact circumstances leading to the tragedy will become clearer once the official investigation is completed.
Diveagar Beach Stretches Nearly Four Kilometres
Located in the Shrivardhan taluka of Raigad district, Diveagar is one of Maharashtra’s well-known tourist destinations. The beach stretches for nearly four kilometres and is surrounded by coconut, areca nut and casuarina trees.
The destination also attracts visitors with water-based activities such as jet skiing, banana boat rides and boating. Large numbers of seagulls can often be seen along the beach in the morning, while the sunset views are another major attraction for tourists.
Diveagar is also known for religious and historical sites, including the famous Suvarna Ganesh Temple and the ancient Roopnarayan Temple.
Sunetra Pawar Speaks to Raigad Collector
Following the tragic incident, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar spoke with the Raigad Collector regarding the situation.
She expressed condolences to the families of the students who lost their lives and directed the administration to provide all necessary assistance to the affected families. She also called for appropriate action in connection with the incident.
Families Left Devastated
What was supposed to be a day of recreation ended in immense tragedy for the families of the students. The deaths of eight students in the same incident have caused widespread grief among their families and the local community.
The authorities are completing the necessary legal procedures. The bodies of the deceased students have been kept at the Borli Panchatan Primary Health Centre, while police continue their investigation into the incident.
