**Nagpur News:** Residents of Nagpur may soon have to pay significantly higher fines for littering and other activities that create nuisance or damage public spaces. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has prepared a proposal to increase penalties for several civic violations, with fines ranging from ₹500 to ₹20,000 depending on the nature and scale of the offence.
The proposal seeks to increase the existing penalty for dumping waste in public places from ₹100 to ₹1,000. It also expands the list of civic offences from 30 to 52, bringing several additional violations under stricter financial penalties.
However, the proposed rules will come into force only after they receive approval from the NMC General Body.
## ₹500 Fine Proposed for Spitting in Public
Under the proposed penalty structure, spitting in public places could attract a ₹500 fine. People found urinating in open or public areas may have to pay ₹1,000, while open defecation could result in a ₹2,000 penalty.
The civic body has also proposed penalties for activities such as illegal construction, encroachment, unauthorised road digging, water theft and damage to public property.
## Higher Penalties for Shops, Hotels and Institutions
The proposed action is not limited to individual citizens. Shops, hotels, institutions and other establishments that generate large quantities of waste will also come under the new rules.
Small hotels, shops and institutions found dumping waste in public places could face a ₹2,000 fine. Establishments generating large amounts of waste could be fined up to ₹20,000.
The proposal also includes penalties for failing to segregate waste. Citizens could face a ₹500 fine, while establishments may be charged ₹2,000 for violating waste segregation requirements.
## Strict Action Over Biomedical Waste
The NMC is also proposing tougher action against improper disposal of biomedical waste. If hazardous medical waste is found inside a regular waste collection vehicle, a penalty of up to ₹10,000 may be imposed.
Repeated violations could lead to the concerned establishment being sealed. Hospitals violating biomedical waste management rules may face fines ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹25,000, along with possible criminal proceedings.
The proposal, prepared by NMC Additional Commissioner Milind Meshram, aims to strengthen civic discipline and discourage activities that make public spaces unhygienic. If approved, the revised penalties could significantly increase the financial consequences for residents and establishments violating civic rules across Nagpur.
