Nagpur: Festival celebrations in Nagpur are set for a major change this year as the city police have imposed restrictions on DJ, Dolby and high-powered sound systems. The order, which came into effect from the night of September 3, 2026, will remain in force until November 1, 2026.
The restrictions cover high-powered and multi-speaker setups such as Dolby, Plasma, Pressure-Mid and Top-Mid-Bass systems. Vehicles specially modified to carry such powerful DJ and sound equipment have also been included under the restrictions.
Why Has Nagpur Police Imposed the DJ Restrictions?
According to the police, excessive sound during festivals and public processions can contribute to noise pollution, public inconvenience, traffic-related problems and law-and-order concerns. The restrictions have been issued under the preventive provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
The move comes ahead of the city's busy festive season, when large processions and public celebrations traditionally involve high-volume music systems.
Laser and Beam Lights Also Face Restrictions
The police action is not limited to sound systems. Restrictions have also been imposed on high-intensity Beam and Laser Lights.
Authorities have raised concerns that powerful laser and beam lights can affect visibility, particularly for motorists, potentially increasing the risk of road accidents.
Is Every Sound System Banned?
No. The restrictions primarily target high-powered and specified DJ/Dolby setups. Sound systems operating within the permissible limits prescribed under the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000 are not automatically covered by the ban.
This distinction is important for event organisers who may still use sound equipment while complying with the prescribed noise limits.
What Happens If the Order Is Violated?
Police have warned that violations of the order can result in legal action and seizure of equipment. DJ operators, event organisers and others using restricted equipment during the period of the order are therefore expected to comply with the directions.
With the festive season approaching, the decision is likely to have a direct impact on DJ operators and organisers across Nagpur.
