Mumbai, Maharashtra: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified its statewide crackdown on food adulteration, unsafe food products and hygiene violations. The enforcement drive has focused on hotels, dairies, restaurants, shops and other establishments involved in the production or sale of food items.
The campaign has gained greater attention since IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe took charge as FDA Commissioner. Officials have been conducting inspections and raids at different locations and taking action wherever adulterated products or serious violations are detected.
Fadnavis Backs FDA Action
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has welcomed the FDA's action against food adulterators and said the enforcement campaign should continue. He stressed the importance of protecting consumers from food products that could pose health risks.
During inspections, FDA teams can seize suspected adulterated or unsafe products and initiate proceedings under applicable food safety laws. Establishments found violating hygiene requirements may also face regulatory action, including action against their licences where applicable.
Hotels, Dairies and Food Businesses Under Watch
The crackdown covers more than just food manufacturers. Hotels, restaurants, dairies, bakeries, retailers and other food businesses are also being inspected for compliance with food safety and hygiene standards.
Milk, paneer, dairy products and other commonly consumed food items have received particular attention as authorities seek to prevent adulterated products from entering the market.
Eknath Shinde Holds Meeting With FDA Commissioner
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also reviewed the ongoing enforcement campaign during a meeting with FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe. The meeting focused on action against food adulteration and the need for stronger measures against those involved in organised adulteration activities.
Authorities have also discussed using the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in cases where the legal conditions for such action are fulfilled. Any application of the law would depend on the facts and legal requirements of individual cases.
Focus on Stronger Legal Action
The government has also emphasised the need to strengthen the legal process in food adulteration cases. Experienced legal professionals may be involved to help ensure that cases are properly documented and can withstand scrutiny during court proceedings.
With support from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and directions from Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the Maharashtra FDA's campaign against food adulteration is expected to continue. The objective is to improve food safety standards and take firm action against businesses that put consumers at risk.
