Jamia Students Reject Union Election Offer After 20 Years

New Delhi, October 26, 2026:** Jamia Millia Islamia has announced plans to hold student union elections after nearly 20 years, following days of protests demanding the restoration of an elected representative body on campus. However, protesting students have rejected the university's latest notice, arguing that it fails to provide a definite election timeline and does not address their demand for the resignation of the university's Proctor.

In an order issued on Monday, the university administration stated that elections to the Jamia Millia Islamia Students' Union (JMISU) would be held 15 days after the approval of the students' union constitution. However, the administration has not specified when the constitution will be approved, leaving students uncertain about when the electoral process will begin.

## Registrar Holds Talks With Protesting Students

Jamia Registrar Mahatab Alam Rizvi reportedly arrived on campus at around 4:30 am on Monday to hold discussions with the protesting students. He shared an official notice outlining the administration's decision and urged the students to call off their agitation, stating that their demands had been addressed.

The students rejected the notice, arguing that it did not provide a clear commitment regarding the restoration of the students' union. They maintained that the university must specify a timeline for approving the constitution and conducting the elections.

According to the protesters, an announcement without a definite schedule does not offer sufficient assurance that the election process will move forward as expected.

## Students Demand Proctor's Resignation

The students have also demanded the resignation of the university's Proctor, a key issue they say remains unresolved in the latest notice.

They argue that the agitation concerns not only the restoration of student union elections but also accountability and meaningful representation in university affairs.

The students have therefore refused to accept the administration's announcement as a complete resolution of the dispute, insisting that their outstanding demands must be addressed.

## Student Union Elections After Nearly Two Decades

The issue of student representation at Jamia Millia Islamia has returned to the spotlight as students press for the restoration of an elected union. The students' union has remained without elected representatives since 2006.

Students believe an elected body is essential for raising campus-related concerns, representing student interests and maintaining a formal channel of communication with the university administration.

While the latest order outlines a possible framework for holding elections, the absence of a specific date for approving the union constitution remains a major point of contention.

## Protest to Continue Amid Unresolved Demands

The protesting students have indicated that their agitation will continue until the administration provides clear assurances on their demands. They have rejected the attempt to end the protest on the basis of the latest notice, arguing that important questions remain unanswered.

The next stage of the dispute will depend on the university's response to the students' demands and whether a clear timeline for the election process is announced.

The developments at Jamia Millia Islamia highlight the continuing disagreement between the administration and students over democratic representation, accountability and the restoration of an elected student union on campus.
