New Delhi: A major aviation incident unfolded on Wednesday aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, after a violent confrontation reportedly broke out inside the cockpit. According to media reports, Indian Captain Smit Machchhar was allegedly attacked by his co-pilot during the flight.

The aircraft subsequently lost several thousand feet in altitude before making an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.

What Happened Inside the Cockpit?

According to initial reports, a violent confrontation reportedly took place between the captain and co-pilot during the flight. The co-pilot is alleged to have attacked Captain Machchhar with a knife and attempted to interfere with control of the aircraft.

During the incident, the aircraft reportedly experienced a rapid loss of altitude. Flight-tracking data cited in reports indicated that the aircraft descended rapidly to around 14,300 feet.

An emergency situation was subsequently declared, and the aircraft was diverted towards Tabuk.

However, the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and the co-pilot's alleged intentions remain under investigation. Flydubai has also urged caution against drawing premature conclusions while the investigation is ongoing.

Injured Indian Captain Smit Machchhar

The captain involved in the incident has been identified as Smit Machchhar, an Indian national who has reportedly been serving as a Boeing 737 captain with Flydubai since June 2022.

Before joining Flydubai, Machchhar spent approximately 11 years with SpiceJet, where he held positions including Senior Commander and Line Training Captain.

According to available professional-profile information, he has accumulated around 9,750 flight hours on Boeing 737 aircraft.

His experience reportedly includes operating Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX aircraft, as well as responsibilities related to pilot training, flight safety and crew operations.

Crew and Passengers Helped During the Emergency

Reports indicate that crew members and passengers outside the cockpit also intervened during the incident. The alleged attacker was reportedly restrained, while the aircraft continued towards Tabuk for an emergency landing.

Additional trained pilots on board are also reported to have assisted in maintaining control of the aircraft and completing the landing safely.

There were reportedly 174 passengers on the flight, and all passengers were reported to be safe. They were later provided with alternative arrangements to continue their journey to Tel Aviv.

What Are the Allegations Against the Co-Pilot?

Israeli officials and media reports have alleged that the co-pilot attempted to damage the aircraft or deliberately cause it to crash. Some reports have identified the co-pilot as an Omani national.

However, the allegation that the aircraft was deliberately targeted for a crash, as well as the co-pilot's exact intentions, remains a matter for the official investigation.

Therefore, describing the incident conclusively as a hijacking or an attempted crash before the investigation is completed would be premature.

Emergency Landing at Tabuk

Following the cockpit incident, the aircraft made an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia.

After landing, medical assistance was reportedly provided to the injured captain and the co-pilot.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also commented on the incident and praised the courage of those involved, saying that the actions of the passengers and crew helped prevent a potentially serious tragedy.

Investigation Will Determine What Really Happened

Flydubai has confirmed that an incident occurred in the cockpit during the flight and that the aircraft was safely diverted to Tabuk. The airline has stated that the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.

For now, the key confirmed outcome is that the passengers and crew of Flight FZ1073 survived the emergency. Captain Smit Machchhar's role has also received attention in several reports following the incident.

The full sequence of events, the motive behind the alleged attack and whether there was an intentional attempt to bring down the aircraft will become clearer once the official investigation is completed.
