Nagpur, Maharashtra: Eastern Vidarbha is set to receive a major boost in road infrastructure, with the Maharashtra government granting administrative approval to a series of large highway projects worth more than ₹42,000 crore.
The projects include the proposed Nagpur-Gondia Access-Controlled Expressway, Nagpur-Chandrapur Access-Controlled Highway, Bhandara-Gadchiroli Access-Controlled Highway and the Navegaon More-Konsari-Mulchera-Hedri-Surjagarh road project.
Together, these projects are expected to create a highway network spanning more than 460 kilometres across eastern Vidarbha.
The planned infrastructure is expected to strengthen connectivity between Nagpur and districts such as Gondia, Bhandara, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli. It could also improve the movement of agricultural produce, minerals and industrial goods across the region.
Four Major Road Projects Approved for Eastern Vidarbha
The proposed highway network covers some of the most important transportation corridors in eastern Maharashtra.
- Nagpur-Gondia Expressway: 162.577 km
- Nagpur-Chandrapur Highway: 204.799 km
- Bhandara-Gadchiroli Highway: 94.241 km
- Navegaon More-Konsari-Mulchera-Hedri-Surjagarh Road: Major connectivity project in Gadchiroli
The three major highway corridors are being planned as access-controlled routes, while the Surjagarh project will provide improved connectivity to an important mineral-rich area of Gadchiroli.
Nagpur-Gondia Expressway Project Gets ₹12,878 Crore Approval
The proposed Nagpur-Gondia Expressway will have a length of approximately 162.577 kilometres.
The direct construction cost of the project is estimated at ₹8,033.37 crore. After including GST and other associated expenses, the total project cost has been fixed at approximately ₹12,878.24 crore.
The project also includes a proposed loan of ₹10,140 crore for a 20-year period, along with ₹4,552.01 crore in government equity contribution.
Once developed, the corridor is expected to provide a faster road connection between Nagpur and Gondia while improving connectivity for areas located along the route.
The improved road network could also benefit agricultural transportation and regional trade between Nagpur, Bhandara and Gondia.
Nagpur-Chandrapur Highway to Cost Over ₹16,354 Crore
Another major project is the Nagpur-Chandrapur Highway, which has a revised length of 204.799 kilometres.
The direct construction cost of the project has been estimated at ₹8,223.59 crore. Including GST and other associated costs, the total approved project cost stands at approximately ₹16,354.55 crore.
For the project, approval has been given for raising a ₹12,880 crore loan with a 20-year tenure. The government will also contribute ₹4,725.26 crore as equity.
The highway is expected to strengthen the road connection between Nagpur and Chandrapur, two strategically important locations in the region.
Chandrapur is known for its industrial and mineral activities, making efficient transportation infrastructure particularly important for the movement of goods.
₹9,610 Crore Approved for Bhandara-Gadchiroli Highway
The proposed Bhandara-Gadchiroli Access-Controlled Highway will cover approximately 94.241 kilometres.
The direct construction cost has been estimated at around ₹5,995 crore, while the total approved project cost is approximately ₹9,610.63 crore.
The corridor is expected to improve connectivity between Bhandara and Gadchiroli and provide a stronger link between eastern Vidarbha and the wider regional transportation network.
For Gadchiroli, improved road connectivity could be particularly significant because of its large geographical area and the presence of mineral and natural resources.
₹3,954.99 Crore for Surjagarh Connectivity Project
The government has also approved ₹3,954.99 crore for the road connecting Navegaon, Konsari, Mulchera and Hedri to Surjagarh in Gadchiroli district.
Surjagarh is an important mineral-rich area, and better road infrastructure could improve transportation between mining areas and industrial and commercial destinations.
The project is also expected to improve road access to parts of Gadchiroli that have traditionally had comparatively limited connectivity.
Why These Highway Projects Matter for Vidarbha
The proposed projects are significant not only because of their size but also because of the regions they are expected to connect.
Eastern Vidarbha has major agricultural, mineral and industrial resources, while transportation infrastructure remains an important factor in determining how efficiently these resources can reach markets.
A stronger highway network could help improve freight movement and provide better connections between production centres and major markets.
Nagpur, with its established road, rail and logistics infrastructure, could play an increasingly important role as a connectivity hub for eastern Vidarbha.
Agriculture Could Benefit From Faster Road Connectivity
Agriculture is an important part of the economy in several districts across eastern Vidarbha.
Better highways can make it easier to transport agricultural products from production areas to larger markets. Faster transportation can also be important for products that require timely delivery.
The Nagpur-Gondia and Bhandara-Gadchiroli corridors could strengthen road-based connectivity between agricultural regions and larger commercial centres.
However, the actual economic impact will depend on factors such as project completion, supporting local roads and the development of logistics infrastructure along the corridors.
Better Roads Could Support Mineral Transportation
Chandrapur and Gadchiroli are among the important mineral-producing areas of the region.
The Surjagarh area in Gadchiroli is particularly significant from a mineral and industrial perspective. Improved road connectivity in and around the region could make transportation of mineral resources more efficient.
The proposed highways could also provide better connections between mining areas, processing facilities, industrial locations and larger transport hubs.
Industrial Development and Employment Potential
Large highway projects can have an impact beyond transportation.
Construction activity itself can generate demand for labour, equipment, materials and services. Once major roads become operational, businesses such as logistics companies, warehouses, transport services, roadside facilities and commercial establishments may also emerge along suitable locations.
Better connectivity can also make certain areas more accessible for future industrial investment.
Three Separate SPVs to Implement Major Projects
The major highway projects will be implemented through separate Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) under the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation.
- MSRDC Nagpur-Gondia Limited for the Nagpur-Gondia project
- MSRDC Nagpur-Chandrapur Limited for the Nagpur-Chandrapur project
- MSRDC Bhandara-Gadchiroli Limited for the Bhandara-Gadchiroli project
The use of separate SPVs is intended to provide dedicated project structures for financing, development and implementation.
24-Year Concession Period
A 24-year concession period has been approved for the major highway projects, including a three-year construction period.
The long-term project structure is designed to cover construction as well as the subsequent concession period under the approved framework.
The progress of land acquisition, clearances, financing and construction will be important factors in determining when the proposed corridors become operational.
Nagpur Could Become an Even Stronger Regional Transport Hub
With major highway projects planned in several directions, Nagpur could further strengthen its position as a key transportation and logistics hub for Vidarbha.
The proposed corridors will create stronger links toward Gondia, Bhandara, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli.
For businesses, transport operators and agricultural producers, improved connectivity could create new opportunities for moving goods between eastern Vidarbha and major markets.
A Major Infrastructure Investment in Eastern Vidarbha
The combined value of the approved projects crosses the ₹42,000 crore mark, making this a major proposed road infrastructure investment for eastern Vidarbha.
The planned network of more than 460 kilometres could significantly strengthen road connectivity across Nagpur, Gondia, Bhandara, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli.
The projects are expected to support better movement of people and goods while potentially strengthening agriculture, mining, logistics and industrial activity in the region.
For eastern Vidarbha, the next major focus will be on implementation. The eventual impact of these projects will depend on the progress of construction, financing, land-related processes, statutory clearances and other project requirements.
With thousands of crores earmarked for the proposed highway network, the projects represent a major infrastructure push for eastern Vidarbha and could play an important role in shaping the region's connectivity and economic landscape in the coming years.
