New Delhi: The political and public debate over E20 petrol is once again set to reach the streets of Delhi. A grand march is reportedly being planned by youth activists in Delhi on September 18, with demands for the resignation of Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari over the E20 fuel policy.
E20 refers to petrol containing up to 20% ethanol. Over the past few months, vehicle owners, social organisations and political groups have raised concerns over the policy. Protesters have alleged that the use of E20 fuel, particularly in older vehicles, could lead to issues related to mileage, engine performance and maintenance.
The Central Government, however, has continued to support the E20 initiative, highlighting its potential to reduce dependence on crude oil imports, lower carbon emissions and create additional economic opportunities for farmers.
The demand for Gadkari's resignation over the E20 issue has also been raised during previous protests. In July, plans for a march towards Parliament Street in Delhi over the E20 fuel policy had also emerged.
According to the organisers, a large number of young participants are expected to reach Delhi on September 18 to put forward their concerns before the government. The proposed protest is likely to focus on a review of the E20 policy, providing vehicle owners with fuel alternatives and demanding the resignation of Nitin Gadkari.
The E20 issue has triggered political statements and protests in different parts of the country. In Nagpur, Youth Congress workers were also detained by police during a protest against E20 fuel.
All eyes are now on the proposed September 18 march in Delhi. The scale of the protest and the government's response to the demands are expected to become clear in the coming days.
